Ever since the cute little helper, Buster Whelp, was introduced in the Breakers of Shadows set, the Buster Blader archetype has found a way to duke it out with the best of them. With even more support being introduced in The Dark Illusion set, we’re bound to see more interesting things coming out of the Buster Blader archetype!

So how can a card that was lost and forgotten in the golden days of Yu-Gi-Oh! make a fiery comeback in this extremely fast paced meta? Well, the answer lies with these two cards:

Buster Dragon lets you make all of your opponents monsters become dragon type, giving you an automatic attack advantage. At this point, your Buster Blader cards already have an enormous amount of additional attack to let you destroy your opponents troublesome cards the old fashioned way! But that’s not all, once per turn, if you don’t control a “Buster Blader” monster, you can target a Buster Blader in your graveyard and special summon it! Even more, once per turn, during your opponents turn, you can target one Buster Blader monster you control and equip it with one Destruction Sword monster from your graveyard. This is damn awesome.

With Buster Dragon alone, you should always have a Buster Blader and one of his little helpers out on the field.

Basic Strategy:

The first thing you always need to have before you’re able to bring out any of your powerful Buster Blader monsters, is to have a Buster Blader card or a Buster Whelp in your hand (ideally both). You can achieve this with cards like Emblem of the Dragon Destroyer, One for One, and any other reasonable search card. Once you have the needed cards in your hand, it all starts with Buster Whelp.

When this card is Normal Summoned: You can add 1 “Destruction Sword” card from your Deck to your hand, except “Buster Whelp of the Destruction Swordsman”. You can only use 1 of the following effects of “Buster Whelp of the Destruction Swordsman” per turn, and only once that turn.
● You can Tribute this card; Special Summon 1 “Buster Blader” from your hand orGraveyard.
● If this card is in your Graveyard and you control “Buster Blader”: You can discard 1 “Destruction Sword” card; Special Summon this card.

This card let’s you add any Destruction Sword card from your deck to your hand (except Buster Whelp), let’s you special summon Buster Blader, let’s you discard a Destruction Sword card (even the one you just added to your hand) and special summon itself from the graveyard! You can then synchro summon Buster Dragon, and then special summon Buster Blader again!

Ideally, you want to have Buster Dragon and Buster Blader, The Dragon Destroyer Swordsman out on the field together, giving you a an extreme advantage over your opponent. At this point, your opponent has very limited options and has to find a way to destroy both cards with something like Raigeki or Dark Hole.

You should be looking at winning the game around this point in the duel –

But what are the risks and challenges in playing this deck? Well, to be honest with you, even with all of the awesome plays and control the deck provides, its biggest downfall is the lack of speed in which you’re able to bring out the necessary cards. Have no fear though, that’s where our Magician Pendulums come into play!

All you need is this: (and standard Magician engine, need I say more?)

In conclusion, the Buster Blader archetype is very powerful and is more than capable in challenging the top decks in the meta. I recommend you try this deck out for yourself and continue to make your own unique adjustments as the deck continues to grow and improve. Who said Blue-Eyes was unstoppable, Yugi’s Magician Bladers seem to have the right countermeasures to stop the unstoppable dragons in their track!
